Panel Discussion including Michele Colburn ’76, Stephanie Lifshutz ’13, and Frances Wolf ’96 from “50 Years: A Celebration of F&M’s Alumnae”

October 17, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Be sure to mark your calendar for a special panel discussion with Michèle Colburn ‘76, Stephanie Lifshutz ‘13, and Frances Wolf ’96, moderated by Sue Washburn ’73. These artists are part of the larger exhibition 50 Years: A Celebration of F&M’s Alumnae Artists that celebrates the 50th anniversary of co-education at F&M by highlighting two alumnae artists from each decade since that historical decision in F&M’s history. The panel discussion will take place in Stahr Auditorium, Stager Hall and the museum will have extended hours from 5:30 to 7 pm as part of this event.

  • After graduating from F&M, Colburn earned a MFA from the American University and is currently a Resident Artist at the Arlington Arts Center. She began the The Trip Wire Project, now on view as part of 50 Years, as a way to visually document the casualties of war since the United States entered into the Middle East conflict.
  • Lifshutz received her MFA in 4D/time-based art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and recently opened her own business, Pumpkin Studios in Brooklyn. She uses neon and text to communicate “suggested commands,” that invite those who read her signs to act of their own volition, rather than following a direct instruction.
  • Wolf earned her second bachelor’s degree at F&M in art and art history before continuing on to earn a MA at Bryn Mawr. Wolf refers to each of new her paintings as “reverse ekphrasis.” Instead of describing an image, she collects sections of poetry and prose that she then responds to and interprets in her art.
  • Washburn was one of the first women admitted to F&M and is a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. She previously served as a vice president of St. Lawrence University, Centenary College, and The Evergreen State College.
