University of Georgia, Georgia Museum of Art

Founded in 1945, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia has been the official state museum of art since 1982. Located on UGA’s busy East Campus, it offers programming for patrons of all ages and free admission to the public for all exhibitions. Of its 22 galleries, 13 focus on the permanent collection, while the others feature temporary exhibitions (both traveling and organized in-house). The collection is especially strong in works on paper, American painting, works by African Americans and southern decorative arts, but also includes a Samuel H. Kress Study Collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings. The museum strives, most of all, to fulfill the legacy of its founder, Alfred Heber Holbrook, and provide free inspiration, removing barriers to accessibility and seeking to foster an open, educational and inspiring environment for students, scholars and the general public.
