September 2nd- October 4th
Opening: September 19, 2019 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Environs, a thematic exhibition addressing the shift in our relationship with landscapes, is a juried exhibition exploring our interactions with our surroundings and how we depict them through art.

Landscape as a subject in art has persisted throughout history, but the way it was perceived shifted often. Landscape painting wasn’t fully accepted until the late 16th century when the Protestant middle class in the Netherlands desired secular art for their homes. Landscape painting in the 17th century portrayed romanticized views of nature, while in the 19th Century the Impressionists focused on depicting landscapes in a more direct way. Photography represented landscape through more formal compositions of close-up and cropped views. The idea of landscape was pushed even further in the 20th century to include urban landscapes, industrial landscapes and landscape architecture.
