Agitation on the Acheron
October 29 – November 23, 2019
Opening Reception: November 2, 2019, Saturday, 3-6 PM
In Conversation: Artists Thaddeus Radell and Simon Carr, November 23, 2019, Saturday, 4PM
Bowery Gallery is pleased to present recent work by Thaddeus Radell, whose darkly luminous paintings evoke journeys through landscapes of the unconscious.
From the artist’s richly layered surfaces—broadly trowelled in places, elsewhere delicately incised—emerge visions of the river Acheron and the ferryman Charon, who in Dante’s Inferno transports souls to the underworld. Elements within these figure compositions, whether humans, horses or boats, appear and disappear within the atmospheric depths, while bits of embedded burlap suggest a ragged dimension beyond paint.
Flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo. (If I cannot bend the heavens above, I will move hell.)
So states a character in Virgil’s Aeneid. Nineteen centuries later, Sigmund Freud borrowed the words to introduce his groundbreaking The Interpretation of Dreams. In similar but less direct fashion, Radell pursues the division between conscious and unconscious, the worldly and the epic.
The exhibition includes a number of small portraits, some attached atop the largest paintings. While inspired by early Renaissance panels, they plumb inner states connecting all eras.
