Virtual Installation | Art of the New West

April 17, 2020 @ 8:00 am - June 8, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Free

Ann Korologos Gallery presents Art of the New West, an alternative exhibition designed to take the viewer on a journey of light and movement amongst landscapes of the West. When these times feels like an abstraction, Art of the New West examines nature through this shifted perspective to find the beauty that surrounds us. On view by appointment at Ann Korologos Gallery from April 17 through June 8, 2020, or virtually at www.korologosgallery.com.

Art of the New West allows the viewer to follow the journey of a river from the high mountain streams to the desert and plains; feel the blossoms and growth of flowers and forests; examine abstract interpretations of the landscape. As Twyla Tharp, an American dancer and choreographer in NYC, said, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.”

“These artists may paint or print in many styles, but they all exhibit loving interactions with the moments they are capturing,” shares Ann Korologos Gallery Director, Sue Edmonds. “We wanted to share the places and moments that both we, and our artists, are dreaming of: water’s edge, sunset vistas, Aspen groves, Spring and Summer flowers.”

Michael Kessler is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His intricately layered, often large-scale, nature-based abstract paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, featured in 135 solo exhibitions and 24 museum collections. Kessler takes an in-depth and decidedly modern look at the “inner dynamics of the natural world” and how the layers form a landscape. As Kessler asked questions of how and why nature took its form by observing erosion and growth through elements like wind and water, these elements, too, shaped his work. Kessler’s abstractions accent modern architecture especially well, and can be found as the focal point in many contemporary homes and buildings.

Marie Figge Wise is based in both Texas and Colorado. Formerly a still-life painter, Wise was driven to paint landscapes through her desire to combine her passion for travel, the outdoors, and love of art. The diffused, tonal quality of Wise’s work encourages the viewer to slow down and feel the calm, quiet of the moment captured on Wise’s canvas.  Art has always influenced Figge Wise’s life, cultivated at first by her family’s involvement with Davenport’s Figge Art Museum, and later pursued through her studies at The Art Students League of New York, of the studio arts and art history in Italy.

Allison Stewart is based in New Orleans and the Roaring Fork Valley. Stewart has gained national recognition for her large, mixed media paintings that express the restless balance between man and nature. Her work is inspired by landscape imagery, and she takes as her subject fragile environments, cycles of life, and primitive artifacts from past cultures. She uses layers of color, light, form and texture to address issues of beauty and loss, time and transformation, order and chaos, creation and destruction, examining overlooked aspects of nature, and the quiet moments when change occurs outside our awareness. Her works examine nature from both the grand scale and the microscopic worlds, seeing similarities in form and structure through her studies as both a biologist and an artist.

Art of the New West features Western landscapes through the abstract and impressionist styles of Michael Kessler, Marie Wise, and Allison Stewart, complimented by vibrant gallery selections of the season by Peter Campbell, Sherrie York, Sean Wallis, Angus Wilson, and more.
